❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn't my color text working?
ANSI color text works on Discord Desktop and Browser, but not on mobile apps. Mobile users will see it as a plain code block.
How does Discord color text work?
Discord uses ANSI escape codes inside code blocks with the "ansi" language tag. The format is ```ansi followed by special escape sequences that define colors.
Can I use any color I want?
No, Discord only supports 8 specific text colors and 8 background colors from the ANSI palette. Custom hex colors are not supported.
Will everyone see my color text?
Users on Discord Desktop and Browser will see the colors. Mobile users will see it as a plain code block without colors.
Is this against Discord's rules?
ANSI color codes currently work in Discord inside ```ansi code blocks on desktop and browser. It's a standard feature of Discord's syntax highlighting, though Discord could change this at any time.
What's the difference between this and Discord Fonts?
Discord Fonts use Unicode characters for fancy text styles (works everywhere). Discord Color Text uses ANSI codes for actual colors (desktop only, inside code blocks).

📜 History of Discord Colored Text

Discord's support for ANSI color codes was discovered by the community in late 2021 when users found that the ```ansi code block would render escape sequences as actual colors. This feature wasn't officially announced by Discord - it was a byproduct of their syntax highlighting system.

Rebane's Discord Colored Text Generator was one of the first tools to make this feature accessible to everyone, inspiring many similar tools including this one.

The ANSI color codes Discord uses come from the Solarized color theme, originally designed for terminal applications. While Discord hasn't officially documented this feature, it continues to work on desktop and browser versions.
